Aussie icons

Published by admin at 3:56 am under Aussie icons, Pop Culture

I dunno about you guys but when I think of typical ‘Australiana’ I think of the icons or inventions that we seem to be associated with worldwide. Thongs, Hills Hoist, Vegemite, early Holdens, Bondi beach. Fish and chips at the beach, to name but a small fractions of what I consider quintessential Aussie icons.

HR Holden Interior

I remember traveling around India, Brad being my first name, whenever I introduced myself the locals eyes would light up and would make yet another quip about “Bradman” the cricketer. I don’t even like Cricket (I know, that’s not very Aussie) but it was a great ice-breaker.

Sometime in the following weeks I’ll find someone with a scanner so I can shareThe great Aussie icon my picture of my beloved ‘ol holden. A HR Special sedan with all the trimmings. “Ol girl” was her name, she was just beautiful. Fell victim to cancer in the end. It was quite a relationship.

What do you think of when someone says “Aussie”. Vegemite, the Hills Hoist, Holdens, Graham Kennedy… ?

The first five words that spring to my mind:

    RSL, Beer, Thongs, Beach, Ute

Damn, that doesn’t really help stereotypes, but hey, that’s just what came to my mind.

I can’t really get beyond Paul Hogan.
